Abstract
Current food packaging, primarily made of non-biodegradable plastics, significantly contributes to environmental pollution. New packaging systems for food applications from biopolymers and/or with multifunctional properties are being developed as substitutes for synthetic polymers. The increasing concern over the environmental effects of packaging waste is driving a transition toward renewable packaging materials. Edible films and coatings play a vital role in maintaining food quality by preventing the loss of aroma, flavour, and important components, while also extending shelf life.
