Abstract
The postharvest shelf life of bananas is relatively short and depends on several factors, including ethylene concentration, respiration rate, microbial growth, temperature, and humidity. Traditional packaging materials such as polyethylene bags and cardboard box are commonly used but they are not highly effective in delaying the ripening, colour change and alteration in organoleptic properties. Biodegradable packaging are promising alternatives to synthetic packaging counterparts used in banana storage. The use of biopolymers, along with active ingredients in packaging has a positive impact on delaying ripening, senescence, and restricting microbial attack. This review examines packaging methods for bananas and mainly focusing on the biobased packaging and their shelf life. The bioactive ingredients, such as ethylene scavengers and antimicrobials, can be combined in biodegradable polymers and applied as a film/wrapping material, or as a coating on bananas. Active packaging technology could be beneficial in extending the shelf life of bananas.
